What is Reiki?

Reiki is a complementary wellness practice originating in Japan. During an in-person session, a practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body. The tradition describes this practice in terms of energy.

I practice traditional Usui Reiki Ryoho. My sessions offer dedicated time for rest, stillness, and personal reflection. Experiences vary, and no particular result is guaranteed.

Reiki is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.

What is your approach to Reiki?

Ground State Reiki was created out of a desire to bring Reiki to people who are looking for the regenerative aspects of energy healing, but who might be skeptical of the Western developed metaphysical techniques many current practitioners employ.

Reiki is for everyone, and a modern understanding of stress and nervous system function informs my approach to Reiki and healing.

What can I expect during an in-person Reiki session?

Each 60-minute appointment begins with a brief conversation about your comfort, preferences, and any questions you may have.

You'll rest fully clothed on a comfortable treatment table. Reiki may involve light touch or hands held just above your body, depending on your preferences. You're always welcome to change your mind, request an adjustment, or pause the session.

There's nothing you need to do or achieve, and no particular sensation you're expected to experience.

We'll finish with a brief conversation and an opportunity to reflect on your experience.

Will I be touched during Reiki?

During an in-person Reiki session, I may use gentle, stationary hand placements or hold my hands just above your body. You are always in control of whether physical touch is part of your session.

Before we begin, we'll briefly discuss your comfort level and preferences. You can choose a completely hands-off session, request adjustments, or change your mind at any time. Your comfort and boundaries will always be respected.

For distance Reiki sessions, there is no physical touch.

What can I expect during an online distance Reiki session?

Each 60-minute distance Reiki session takes place live over Zoom. We'll begin with a brief conversation to answer your questions and help you settle in.

For the Reiki portion, find a quiet, comfortable place where you can sit or lie down. You're welcome to turn off your camera and microphone during this time.

There's nothing you need to do, feel, or achieve. Simply make yourself comfortable and allow yourself some uninterrupted time to rest.

We'll reconnect at the end for a brief conversation and an opportunity to reflect on your experience.

What should I wear to a Reiki session?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to rest easily. You’ll remain fully clothed throughout the session. Light layers can help you adjust to the room temperature.

What might I feel during or after a session?

Everyone experiences Reiki differently. Some people describe feeling deeply relaxed, peaceful, or calm. Others notice sensations such as warmth, tingling, or a sense of heaviness or lightness. You might find your mind wandering, feel sleepy, or simply enjoy a quiet moment of rest. You might also feel an emotional shift, which is perfectly normal.

It's also completely normal not to notice anything unusual. There's no particular sensation you need to experience, and no right or wrong way to feel during a session.

Afterward, some people report feeling refreshed, grounded, or more at ease, while others notice little immediate change. Some people experience an emotional shift, or a deeper connection to their feelings. Every experience is individual, and no specific outcome is guaranteed.

Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to work?

Not at all. You don't need to hold any particular spiritual beliefs or understand the concept of energy to experience a Reiki session.

Reiki is rooted in Japanese tradition, but you're welcome to approach it with curiosity, skepticism, or simply a desire for some quiet time to yourself.

At Ground State Reiki, there's no expectation that you believe in anything specific or experience a particular sensation. My role is to provide a calm, supportive environment where you can relax and explore the experience for yourself.

Whether Reiki becomes a regular part of your self-care routine or simply offers you an hour to pause and unwind, you're welcome exactly as you are.
